“The art of teaching is the art of assisting discovery.”

Teaching Philosophy

Emma strongly believes that music is merely a vehicle to express one’s greatest, excitable, and most passionate thoughts - and knows that, so often, many thoughts that are unable to be communicated through the spoken word can be shared through music. As a true student keen to gain knowledge in all areas of life’s studies, she pursues every opportunity with great enthusiasm alongside her peers and colleagues with great attention to detail, and care & dedication, in the hope to not only gain experience but a whole education; nicknamed “the Mary Poppins of Teaching”, she is deeply imaginative and inspired by her students each day. She is keen to engage in and commence conversations that allow others to explore who they are and their own passions & interests and is insistent upon emphasizing the importance of imperfection. This shows in the kind of education her students receive, as it is well-rounded, of excellent quality, diverse, and rich. For 15+ years of experience, and in teaching individuals of all ages and levels, she has uplifted students and guided them in a holistic manner, consistently supporting each individual with a custom curriculum. She is committed to the school of one’s being; a conduit for learning that seeks the guidance of the expression of one’s passions.  The studio of Emma Colette Moss prides itself upon excellence, intention, passion, diversity, and courage.

Art Song: a genre of classical music that has the most incredible history, riddled with influence from the greatest romantic poets of all time, from Schiller to Goethe, and beyond. Art song, defined as a composition of vocal music, speaks to what it means to experience the vulnerabilities of humanity - to be in love, to be confused or lost, to be hurt ... topics that the masters have explored for centuries, from Schubert to Mendelssohn, to the Schumanns and Brahms, and beyond. In this two-hour workshop, Emma Moss will be exploring the history of art song, it’s poetic influences, and will be teaching a selection of pieces for all to engage in. From romantic masterworks, to modern art songs by live composers, to some of the first works of this genre, the range of this workshop is sure to entice those who love singing, music-making, poetry, and the connection between words & music.

Historical context is everything in music-making. Understanding the social climate of a time, the relationships shared between friends, the political events ... it all gives way, and shows, in the works of the greats, from Mozart to Beethoven, to Grieg, and beyond. In this two-hour workshop, Emma Moss will take you through a grand overview of music history, engaging with the past of a select range of classical composers, listening to and discussing pieces, singing various melodies together, and demonstrating the importance of historical context in music-making as we enliven our performances of today with a critical understanding of yesterday.

“Teacher Emma is a great teacher beacuse she is nice and kind, and is not strict about me having mistakes on the piano. She understands if I am struggling and helps me overcome it and let’s me take a break when I need to. When I need a hand with a piano piece, she is always there to help and teach me the right way. She listens and pays attention to what I say and cares about it, and I think she is the best teacher in the world!”

“We’ve been with Emma for a few years now, and we’ve had a great experience with her so far. This includes a few months of virtual lessons due to Covid. She is very accommodating with our schedule and is quick to respond when we try to reach her. She gives detailed practice instructions at the end of each lesson, and my daughter feels pride every time they finish a piece together. Emma is very patient and skilled in her teaching and helps our daughter feel prepared for recitals. We also look forward to hearing her perform at the end of the recitals which is always a treat for our family. Above all, we recommend Emma because of her kindness and patience. She is great fit for our family and our daughter enjoys taking lessons with her and looks up to her very much.”
